MADD Gets a “D” Rating from Charity-Watcher!

July 27th, 2010

The American Institute of Philanthropy’s (AIP) Charity Rating Guide & Watchdog Report has downgraded Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) to a “D” rating on a A-F scale in its August 2010 report.

American Beverage Institute (ABI) Director Sarah Longwell stated that, “Under the leadership of CEO Chuck Hurley, MADD further diminished its focus on victim services and educating Americans about the dangers of drunk driving, instead pushing anti-drinking, anti-alcohol public policies,”  The public needs to realize that MADD isn’t the same group it was 20 years ago.”

Another charitable giving guide, Charity Navigator, gives MADD an overall rating of 1 out of 4 stars. Charity Navigator reserves this embarrassing basement-level for a charity that “fails to meet industry standards.”  Longwell continued: “MADD’s anti-alcohol agenda includes advocating for alcohol detectors in all cars, sobriety checkpoints and sky-high alcohol taxes. By spending on these new priorities, MADD has diverted money from programs created to help the victims of drunk driving and get dangerous drunk drivers off the roads.”

These financial changes reveal a shift in MADD’s mission. In the words of its own founder Candy Lightner: MADD “has become far more neo-prohibitionist than I had ever wanted or envisioned … I didn’t start MADD to deal with alcohol. I started MADD to deal with the issue of drunk driving.”

At DaytonDUI we have consistently opposed MADD’s neo-prohibitionist agenda.  Candy Lightner is a hero who changed the world for the better, but the organization she spawned has grown so far beyond its purpose that it is falling of its own weight.  It has become nothing more than another special-interest group looking to make big money off government programs.  What is worse is the detrimental effect MADD has had on our Constitutional rights.  I would give them an “F.”

Reporting Requirements

Under 14 CFR 61.15, all pilots must send a Notification Letter (MS Word) to FAA’s Security and Investigations Division within 60 calendar days of the effective date of an alcohol-related conviction or administrative action. In 14 CFR 61.15(c), alcohol-related convictions or administrative actions refer to motor vehicle actions (MVA).

Notification Letters

Note: Each event, conviction, or administrative action, requires a separate Notification Letter. For example, an airman’s driver license may be suspended at the time of arrest for driving under the influence of alcohol for either:

  • Failing a blood/breath test
  • Refusing to test

The airman must send a Notification Letter for the suspension, then send a second Notification Letter if the alcohol related offense results in a conviction. Even though the airman sent two notification letters, FAA views the suspension and conviction as one alcohol-related incident.

Send Notification Letters to:

Federal Aviation Administration
Security and Investigations Division (AMC-700)
P.O. Box 25810
Oklahoma City, OK 73125
or
Fax to: (405) 954-4989

To speed processing, the letter must contain the following information:

  • Name, Address, Date of Birth, Certificate Number, Telephone Number
  • Type of Violation (conviction and/or administrative action)
  • Date(s) of Action(s)
  • State Holding the Record
  • Driver License Number or State ID Number (if not licensed)
  • Statement whether this relates to a Previously Reported MVA

History

The DUI/DWI compliance program began in November 1990 by Congressional act. The final rule published in the Federal Register on August 1, 1990, is Federal Aviation Regulation 14 CFR Parts 61 and 67.

Dead Drunk from Brew Dog

BrewDog Brewery

BrewDog, a microbrewery out of Scotland created the world’s strongest beer at 55% alcohol. And while that was sure to raise a few eyebrows, the company decided to go a step further and place the limited edition of 12 bottles inside the taxidermied bodies of squirrels, stoats and a hare.  The bottles—which cost more than $700 each—sold out in less than four (4) hours, although the controversy they are raising is sure to last as long as the preserved bodies of the beer-cozies.
