By September 25, 2011 – 1:24 amWhat’s funny is that I haven’t even done this assignment yet even thgouh I thgouht it would be fun to do. I couldn’t have envisioned a better postcard. First that you discarded the convention of a simple 2D piece of design, mailable, printable, for the animated GIF. And second and probably more importantly is that this postcard is a contrast to the traditional promotional portrait of a time and location. Those portraits are typically more carefully considered, and not built around a single citizen’s experience of their town. This person wandered into the recent past and visited the spaces you likely knew so familiarly, but found them changed dramatically. Did you imagine you might have some control over these places, because it was where you grew up?Every time I revisit my home town, I drive the Strip-mall USA, as I call it, the main avenue of town, and see the impermanence of it all. Oh that was once a Carvel. That was where we used to buy used records. And I wonder if I’m being overcome by nostalgia or is there something that’s truly lost. I want my memories of this place and time to be something that matters. Does it matter?
